  LADY AND THE PANDA

Wealthy young adventurer Bill Harkness died in China while on a quest for a giant panda. It was the 1930s, and nobody had ever succeeded in taking a panda out of China alive. His widow, Ruth, took her $20,000 inheritance and embarked on a journey to the remote mountains and thick bamboo forests of the China-Tibet border in search of a live giant panda. Against all odds, she succeeded where her husband had not. Ruth Harkness fearlessly arranged the expedition into unknown territory where they ultimately found a baby giant panda. She was completely prepared, with bottles, nipples and milk, and was able to keep little Su-Lin alive all the way back to the United States. Su-Lin then lived at the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago, where he was a instant sensation, attracting enormous crowds. Seventy years later, Harkness's niece and several interested friends, including author Croke, retraced the steps of Ruth Harkness's incredible journey.
This book is based on many never-before-released letters and this second trip. Raver's outstanding gentle and lyric reading of this inspiring story is slow and clear. Susan Offner, Teacher, Lexington HS, Lexington, MA
